President Hakainde Hichilema recently started his second term in office after victory in Zambia's August 2026 elections.

Zambia is targeting economic growth of 4.9% next year, its finance minister said on Friday, laying out the government's priorities in a budget speech.

The government will aim to reduce the fiscal deficit to not more than 3.0% of gross domestic product (GDP).

It will also limit net domestic borrowing to 2.9% of GDP.

The Southern African copper-producing country emerged from a prolonged debt crisis after becoming Africa's first COVID-era sovereign default in 2020.
