Guinea-Bissau's military leaders on Thursday announced a ban on demonstrations as they eased some restrictions implemented since taking power a day earlier, including lifting a nighttime curfew.

"Previously imposed measures" that additionally included traffic restrictions, "are lifted as of midnight today", the military's newly installed High Command said, adding that it "strictly prohibits any demonstration, march, strike or action that disrupts peace and stability."

The command additionally reported that President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who was arrested Wednesday, was in "good health."

Embalo was deposed on Wednesday after the military declared that the November 23, 2025 elections had credibility issues after both Embalo and his main challenger, Fernando Dias, claimed victory.

On Thursday, General Horta Nta Na Man was sworn in as the country's transitional president, with the military stating that the transition period will last around one year.
