Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that it targeted a US aircraft carrier and a navy destroyer with ballistic missiles, claiming both were damaged and withdrew from the area.
The IRGC said in a statement published by IRNA news agency that its Aerospace Force launched the missiles at the two warships.
It claimed the vessels had harassed Iranian ships and were taking part in a maritime blockade, adding that both warships left the "engagement area" after sustaining damage.
Earlier, Iran’s IRGC Navy said it targeted 3 oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three US-linked vessels elsewhere in response to US attacks on Iranian tankers.
Noting the morning's attacks, the IRGC said its naval forces had subsequently "targeted three oil tankers on the unauthorised route of the Strait of Hormuz and three vessels affiliated with America in other areas", warning other ships not to attempt to transit by unapproved routes.
There was no immediate confirmation from the US.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi held a phone call, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
The two ministers discussed "comprehensively" the latest developments in the ongoing negotiations, the sources said.
Regional tensions have escalated since US-Israeli attacks on Iran began on February 28, with Tehran responding with missile and drone strikes against Israel and US interests across the region.
