Somalia and Algeria have reaffirmed their solidarity with the people of Palestine, emphasising their support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds al-Sharif as its capital.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune also reaffirmed their support for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during talks in Algiers on Tuesday

“We have agreed to stand steadily and solidly with the people of Palestine for their independence and their own state, which, Al-Quds Al-Sharif is the capital within the borders of 1967,” President Mohamud said.

“We have discussed many other issues that exist in the Arab world regarding Libya, regarding Sudan, regarding Sahara. And all of them we understand that, those countries, Libya and Sudan, their sovereignty, territorial integrity has to be respected,” he added.

They called for peaceful, inclusive political solutions in Sudan, Libya and Western Sahara led by the citizens of those countries free from foreign interference.

"We expressed our rejection of interference with dire consequences, which continues to harm Sudan and exacerbate the situation, breaching all principles, values, and moral political foundations on which the traditions of cooperation, solidarity, and cooperation in the Arab world and Africa are based," President Tebboune said.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to multilateralism, cooperation under the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and alignment with Somalia’s Vision 2060 for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Opportunities for partnership

Somalia and Algeria agreed to establish a joint ministerial committee tasked with overseeing progress and identifying new opportunities for partnership.

The two leaders also presided over the signing of cooperation agreements covering multiple strategic sectors during the state visit by President Mohamud - the second of its kind between the two nations.

The agreements include partnerships in livestock exports, agriculture, fisheries, education, oil and natural gas exploration, animal health, and the facilitation of diplomatic travel.

Under the new framework, holders of Somali diplomatic passports will receive visas upon arrival in Algeria.

An additional memorandum of understanding on higher education was signed between the education ministries of both countries.

University scholarships

President Tebboune announced that Algeria will welcome 110 Somali students during the 2026–2027 academic year, while reaffirming his country’s readiness to expand cooperation in energy, agriculture, fisheries, pharmaceuticals, and higher education.

President Mohamud expressed deep appreciation for Algeria’s continued friendship and solidarity with Somalia, describing the visit as “a testament to the enduring bond between our two nations, and our shared vision for peace, development, and self-reliance in Africa.”

The Somali leader also thanked President Tebboune for offering 500 university scholarships to Somali students in vital disciplines such as agriculture, fisheries and petroleum engineering - fields critical to Somalia’s national development.
