The African Union on Saturday condemned attacks in Mali for putting civilians at risk, as the West African country battled assaults in its capital and elsewhere by what its army called "terrorist groups".
The AU Commission's chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said in a statement posted online that he "strongly condemns these acts, which risk exposing civilian populations to significant harm".
He also reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to peace and stability, expressing solidarity with the Malian people and security forces.
Clashes between Malian armed forces and unidentified “terrorist groups” on Saturday rocked the capital Bamako and several regions of the country.
In a statement, the Malian army said the situation in the country was "under control" and that the attackers had suffered "heavy setbacks".
Terror attacks were also reported at Gao and Kidal in the north, and in the central city of Sevare.
