Several passengers were injured after a train operating along Nigeria’s Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor derailed following a collision on the track, local media reports

The incident occurred near Asham on the busy rail line linking Abuja and Kaduna, sparking panic among those onboard

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, told reporters that “Emergency response protocols were immediately activated.”

Preliminary findings indicate the train left the tracks after colliding with an object. Officials have yet to provide full details on the nature of the obstruction or the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ongoing investigations

“The Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) is also on site to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident in line with established safety procedures. The Corporation assures the public that safety remains its top priority, and all necessary measures are being taken to address the situation,” Opeifa said.

Several passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were evacuated to a medical facility at Idu Railway Station, where they are receiving treatment. Authorities said no fatalities had been recorded as of the time of filing this report.

Witnesses and videos shared on social media showed damaged coaches and railway personnel inspecting the affected train. Stranded passengers were also seen gathered near the tracks after safely disembarking, as rescue officials coordinated evacuation efforts.

The NRC management said the derailment occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near Asham, involving a rear locomotive and the adjacent passenger coach due to a coupling issue.

Some passengers sustained injuries and were promptly attended to and taken to a nearby medical facility for proper medical care. No fatalities were recorded.
