One of the continent’s biggest film awards platforms, the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, has announced a major shake-up, with long-time host and Nigerian on-air personality IK Osakioduwa dropped after an uninterrupted 11-year run.
Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha are the new co-hosts for the 12th edition of the awards, set to take place on May 9, 2026, in Lagos at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
For many viewers, IK has been synonymous with the AMVCA since its debut in 2013—bringing charm, consistency, and a steady presence to the show year after year.
But the new hosts bring their own distinct spark.
Profile of the Hosts
Bovi Ugboma
Bovi Ugboma is one of Nigeria’s most recognisable stand-up comedians, celebrated for his storytelling and quick wit. Born in Benin City, he studied Theatre Arts at Delta State University before carving out a global career in comedy. His popular Man on Fire comedy specials have toured internationally, cementing his reputation as a dynamic performer both on stage and on screen.
Nomzamo Mbatha
Nomzamo Mbatha is a multi-faceted talent—actress, producer, businesswoman, and human rights advocate. She rose to fame with her role in the South African telenovela Isibaya and gained international recognition in Coming 2 America alongside Eddie Murphy.
She currently stars as Queen Nandi in Shaka iLembe and also serves as an executive producer on the series. Beyond entertainment, she is a Global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, using her platform to advocate for humanitarian causes.
Organisers have hinted at a night where wit meets star power—an exciting mix for a show that celebrates the best of African film and television.
“A master of wit and narrative, and a global icon of screen and advocacy. This is where mastery meets African excellence,” AMVCA said in their announcement on social media.
Bovi has already acknowledged the weight of the moment, saying he hopes to bring energy, laughter, and “magic” to one of the continent’s biggest entertainment platforms.
Veteran Nigerian actress Joke Silva will serve as head judge for this year’s awards, adding further prestige to the event.
