Somali, Turkish agricultural ministers discuss food security, management

The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation in agriculture, water management, and food security.

Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), and the Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, discussed enhancing cooperation in agriculture and food waste management at a forum in Istanbul on Friday.

The ministers, who met on the sidelines of the High-Level Agriculture Ministers’ Panel themed “Preventing Food and Water Waste – Claiming the Future,” discussed support and investment opportunities for Somali farmers, including irrigation, agricultural equipment, seeds, mechanisation, and modern farming technologies.

They also explored ways to enhance collaboration in the trade and production of agricultural goods.

Minister Maareeye commended Türkiye for its consistent solidarity and unwavering support for the Somali people.

Deepening partnerships

“Somalia remains committed to deepening its partnership with our sister nation Türkiye, and we will continue to advance our strong and strategic collaboration for the benefit of our peoples,” Maareeye wrote on X

Türkiye, for its part, reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening cooperation with the friendly and brotherly nation of Somalia, particularly in the fields of agriculture, water, and food security.

“As Turkey, we will continue to strengthen our solidarity with our friendly and brotherly nation, Somalia, and to pursue strong cooperation,” Minister Yumakli wrote on X.
