Türkiye and Algeria have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation following the meeting between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Thursday.

The cooperation areas span key sectors, including energy, mining, transportation, and agriculture.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and regional issues during their meeting at the Turkish Presidential Complex.

President Erdogan described Algeria as one of Türkiye's largest trade partners in Africa and emphasised the importance of expanding economic collaboration between the two countries.

"We are determined to enhance our cooperation with Algeria, which is one of our biggest trade partners in the continent of Africa, in many strategic areas, notably energy, mining, transportation and agriculture," President Erdogan said.

'Shared history'

He added that Türkiye and Algeria had accelerated efforts to reach a bilateral trade volume target of $10 billion, a goal first announced in 2023.

Highlighting the historical foundations of Türkiye-Algeria relationship, Erdogan said the partnership between the two countries is driven by "mutual respect and affection stemming from our shared history."

"The spirit of solidarity is visible not only in our bilateral relations, but also in the common stance we display in many international matters," he said.

The meeting between the two presidents underscored growing ties between Ankara and Algiers as Türkiye continues to expand its diplomatic and economic engagement across Africa.

President Tebboune is in Türkiye for a three-day official visit from May 6 to 8, 2026 at the invitation of President Erdogan.
