Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has called on residents of the capital, Mogadishu, to take a frontline role in ensuring the safety, prosperity and reputation of the city.

Mogadishu has in recent years experienced improved security as the government continues its fight against the al-Shabaab terrorist organization. The city is also experiencing a construction boom that has changed its infrastructure and skyline.

Prime Minister Barre said the federal government will continue investing in the rehabilitation and upgrading of key social amenities, including the city’s road network.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of a newly opened road, that is part of broader efforts to modernise critical infrastructure in the capital.

Barre said the road is expected to reduce transportation costs, improve access to markets, schools and health facilities, and stimulate local businesses in the area.

‘Fastest-growing’ city

“I call upon the city dwellers to ensure the safety of this city, maintain its reputation, and never allow it to return to its past,” the prime minister said.

“Some people still hold old memories of Mogadishu, but Mogadishu today is not the Mogadishu you once knew. The city has recovered and is now among the safest and fastest-growing capitals and it will continue to rise.”

He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining cleanlines.

The prime minister also applauded Mogadishu residents for changing their mindset and playing a crucial role in the city’s transformation, noting that progress achieved over the past decade was once thought impossible.

He credited the success to close cooperation between the federal government, the Banadir regional administration and the public.
