Several websites of the Kenyan government suffered a coordinated cyberattack that took down official websites across multiple ministries and state agencies, local media reports.
Checks show access to a majority of the websites was inaccessible, as the defacement involved altering their visual appearance and content, replacing legitimate information with unauthorised material, local news outlet Citizens Digital reports.
The attack targeted some of the country’s most essential government services, hitting the ministries of Health, Education, Labour, Environment, ICT, Tourism, Energy, Water, and Interior.
Visitors to the compromised sites encountered defaced pages with the messages “Access denied by PCP” and “We will rise again” among some unauthorised texts on display.
No claim
As of the time of publishing, no group has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack. Neither the government nor any of the affected ministries and agencies have issued official statements about the breach or provided timelines for restoration of services.
This is not the first time the Kenyan government websites have been attacked. In July 2023, authorities reported its digital platform e-Citizen, responsible for government services and housing citizens' sensitive personal data, suffered a cyberattack.
The attack had caused service disruptions in Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and Kenya Railways.
