The Turkish government has handed over a suite of broadcast and digital production equipment to the Somali government.

The equipment, including cameras, live transmission systems, and digital editing tools, were officially received by Somalia's Information Minister Daud Aweis Jama on Sunday.

The Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Alper Aktas and Zafer Eşki, the head of Türkiye's international development agency TIKA, were present during the ceremony in Somali capital Mogadishu.

The handover of the broadcast equipment is aimed at revitalising Somali State Media, which has undergone structural and technological reforms in recent years.

Equipment enhances broadcaster's capacity

The equipment will enhance the national broadcaster's ability to deliver accurate information and counter misinformation.

The media modernisation project, implemented by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), was lauded as a reflection of Türkiye's commitment to advancing Somalia's broadcasting infrastructure as a pillar of democratic governance and public accountability.

Information Minister Daud Aweis hailed the support from Türkiye and TİKA, describing it as a "timely boost for Somalia's public media in its mission to inform, educate, and inspire."

The minister added that the new technology will strengthen national narratives around state-building, transparency, counter-extremism, and Somalia's upcoming elections.

International best practices

Turkish Ambassador to Mogadishu, Alper Aktaş reaffirmed Türkiye's solidarity with Somalia, noting that the cooperation extends beyond development assistance to "a genuine partnership built on shared values, mutual respect, and a vision for a more informed and connected society."

TİKA Somalia head, Zafer Eşki, highlighted that the upgraded facilities will enhance production quality, newsroom efficiency, and live coverage capabilities across Somalia's public media institutions.

He added that TİKA remains committed to supporting the training, technical capacity building, and the modernisation of media infrastructure to align Somalia's broadcasting standards with international best practices.

In recent years, Somalia's National State Media, comprising SNTV, Radio Mogadishu, and the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), has played a crucial role in the domestic and international information ecosystem.

It has also become a key driver in the fight against extremist propaganda amid Somalia's socioeconomic and political recovery from a devastating civil conflict.
