Sudan’s military says it has repelled a large-scale attack on the city of Al Fasher by “terrorist militia”, following intense clashes that left dozens of assailants dead and forced the rest to retreat, the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reports.

According to a briefing from the army’s Sixth Infantry Division, the attack began around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, when an enemy infantry unit attempted to infiltrate the command’s training school area in a bid to reach the division’s headquarters, known as the “Fortress of Steadfastness.”

The Sudanese Armed Forces, operating alongside the police, intercepted the attackers, inflicting heavy casualties and destroying several of their vehicles.

In a statement, the army commended the “bravery and steadfastness” of the city’s defenders, extending condolences to the families of fallen soldiers and wishing a swift recovery to the wounded.

The army said the remaining terrorists fled south of the city after suffering “significant losses in lives and equipment.” The army did not name the group responsible for the attack.

However, the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have had a long running war since April 2023, which has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities.

Counter-attacks

The statement added that the attackers had intensified artillery fire on both military and residential areas in preparation for a coordinated assault from Al Fasher’s northern and eastern approaches, near Al-Zareeba and Darfur Secondary School.

However, the offensive was met with what the army described as “strong resistance,” leading to the deaths of several senior terrorist militia commanders.

The Sixth Infantry Division said the battle marked its 263rd “decisive victory,” noting that additional enemy vehicles had been destroyed over the past two days.

“Al Fasher remains unbreakable,” the army declared, pledging that the city would continue to be defended by “courageous men who fight with both their hearts and weapons,” while affirming the unity of Sudan’s armed forces across all fronts.
