A prominent Ghanaian preacher has advised worshippers to exercise regularly, eat balanced diet, get regular exposure to the sunlight, and drink water frequently to increase their chances of living longer.
Pastor Christopher Agbeyanfia, the regional coordinator of the Middle-Belt Zone of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, said on Sunday, March 8, 2026 that while God gives life, it is incumbent upon the people to look after themselves.
The preacher further said that minimising sugary and canned foodstuff, eating fruits, avoiding alcohol and drugs, and having adequate rest also contribute to longer lifespans.
Regarding exposure to the sunlight, he said that moderate sunlight strengthens a person's bones, especially when one grows older.
Genetics
As for regular physical exercise, the preacher said it improves digestion, helps in the eradication of bodily toxins, and enables the body to maintain optimum temperature, while keeping blood pressure in check.
While LinkedIn records show that the preacher studied a professional course in English, his suggestions broadly align with what medics recommend as part of healthy living.
Several scientific studies, however, show that genetics contribute about 50% toward a person's life expectancy, barring extreme lifestyle choices.
According to Statista, the average life expectancy in Africa is 63 to 64 years. In Ghana, an average person's lifespan is around 65 years.
African countries with long life expectancy
According to the United Nations' data, six African countries have an average life expectancy of above 70 years.
These are Tunisia at nearly 77 years, Cape Verde 76, Morocco and Mauritius at around 75 years each, Seychelles at approximately 73 years, and Egypt at nearly 72 years.
According to the UN, life expectancy in Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, Chad, Lesotho, and the Central African Republic is below 60 years.
