Uganda's outgoing Parliamentary Speaker Anita Among is under heavy scrutiny and investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering.

On Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, her homes in Uganda were raided by law enforcement officers as part of investigations into illicitly obtained wealth.

As the highly publicised probe continued, 52-year-old Among announced on Sunday that she will not seek re-election as the speaker of Uganda's parliament for the 2026-2031 period, citing "deep introspection."

She further pledged her "total support to candidates who will be endorsed by President Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM)", Uganda's long-serving ruling party.

Dramatic incidents

But beneath that statement, were highly dramatic incidents, including Among's two-hour meeting with President Museveni at State House-Entebbe on Thursday, May 14.

Two days later, officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the army raided her home in the high-end neighbourhood of Nakasero in Kampala.

On Sunday, they raided Among's other upscale home in Kigo, located on the outskirts of Kampala.

Ugandan media report that Among's mobile gadget was confiscated to enable an investigation into financial records and electronic transactions.

Rolls-Royce seized

The probe into Among's wealth comes after the Daily Monitor reported in early May that Among had acquired a 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan from Britain in April at a cost of $440,000. The luxury vehicle has since been seized as part of investigations into alleged graft.

It is not immediately clear whether that particular acquisition raised the authorities' eyebrows into Among's wealth.

A section of Ugandan media report that Among had expressed an interest in seeking re-election as Uganda's parliamentary speaker against the will of NRM's senior leadership.

According to President Museveni's aides, NRM prefers Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the speakership post.

Parliament to elect new speaker

Oboth-Oboth is the Member of Parliament for West Budama County South in eastern Uganda. He has represented his constituents since 2011.

Ugandan lawmakers will elect parliamentary speaker on May 25 following President Museveni's swearing-in on May 12.

The new parliament will settle officially following the members' victories in the January 15, 2026 general election.

While the speakership contest appears to attract significant interest, the rise and apparent embattlement of outgoing speaker, Anita Among, has been emphatic.

Among's rise to speakership

In January, she won Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat under the NRM party. Bukedea district is in eastern Uganda.

Previously, Among was a long-term member of the opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), led by veteran politician Kizza Besigye.

In 2016, she successfully ran as an independent candidate in the Bukedea Woman Representative parliamentary election. In 2020, she joined Museveni's NRM.

In the January 2021 general election, Among was elected to parliament unopposed. In March the following year, she was elected speaker, replacing Jacob Oulanyah who died in the US after an illness.

Among attributes her wealth to business ventures

In June 2025, Among was faulted for publicly referring to President Museveni as "God the Father", while likening the president's son and army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to "Jesus Christ."

While the probe into her wealth intensifies, Among has repeatedly said she is a successful businesswoman whose investments span education, healthcare, and media sectors.
