Morocco has issued an Africa Cup of Nations-themed banknote and coin to mark its hosting of the ongoing football tournament.

They carry national symbols with references to football and newly developed sports facilities, said the kingdom's central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM).

In a statement, the bank said the silver coin, which has a face value of 250 dirhams ($27.5), and the banknote, which has a face value of 100 dirhams, had been put into circulation.

“All stages of the design and production process of this commemorative coin and banknote were carried out exclusively by Moroccan specialists,” it said.

The commemorative coin is made from a silver and copper alloy, and weighs nearly 30 grams. It carries on its front side a portrait of King Mohammed VI, accompanied by the inscriptions “Mohammed VI” and “Royaume du Maroc” in Arabic script.

The year of issue, indicated as 1447-2025, also appears in Arabic and Tifinagh characters.

The 100-dirham commemorative banknote illustrates the Kingdom’s commitment to sports and highlights its new sports infrastructure, BAM said.

It was issued in limited quantities on Monday and will circulate concurrently with the 100-dirham.

The front of the banknote features the portrait of King Mohammed VI, the coat of arms of the Kingdom, a representation of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, the map of Africa, a Moroccan arabesque motif and a stylized football.

Morocco is hosting the 35TH edition of the Africa Cup of Nations that kicked off on Sunday. Matches are taking place across several cities in the kingdom.
