Victor Osimhen delivered a historic performance on Wednesday night, becoming Galatasaray’s all-time leading foreign goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian striker struck in extra time of a pulsating knockout play-off clash against Juventus, sealing a dramatic 7–5 aggregate victory and sending the Turkish champions into the Round of 16.

Despite losing 3–2 on the night in Turin, Galatasaray progressed thanks to two extra-time goals after Juventus forced the tie beyond 90 minutes in a spirited comeback attempt.

Trailing 5–2 from the first leg in Istanbul, Juventus mounted a fierce response. Manuel Locatelli opened the scoring from the penalty spot late in the first half after Lucas Torreira fouled Khephren Thuram. The hosts were then reduced to 10 men shortly after the break when Lloyd Kelly was sent off.

Silencing home fans

Federico Gatti levelled matters on aggregate with 20 minutes remaining, and Weston McKennie’s late header brought the home crowd to life as Juventus looked the more dangerous side despite their numerical disadvantage.

But just as momentum appeared to swing decisively toward the Italians, Osimhen silenced the stadium. Latching onto a pass from Baris Alper Yilmaz in the first half of extra time, the Super Eagles forward fired a composed finish through the legs of goalkeeper Mattia Perin to restore Galatasaray’s aggregate lead.

It was the Nigeria international’s 13th European goal for the Turkish Super Lig champions.

The 27-year-old surpassed the record (12) previously held by former Czech international Milan Baros.

Osimhen has so far registered seven goals, and two assists in the Champions League this season.

Yilmaz later added a decisive second in extra time, finishing off a swift counterattack as Juventus, having expended enormous energy in their comeback bid, finally ran out of steam.

Osimhen’s decisive contribution earned him the Player of the Match — his fourth in this season’s competition.

Galatasaray will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16, with the draw scheduled for Friday.
