Iran fills Khamenei's position, at least temporarily
Alireza Arafi was appointed on Sunday as the jurist member of Iran's Leadership Council, a body tasked with fulfilling the supreme leader's role until the Assembly of Experts elects a new leader, ISNA news agency reported.
A cleric member of the Guardian Council, Arafi will be part of the temporary Leadership Council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.
Arafi’s appointment came after Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in Israeli and US attacks, igniting calls for revenge from the Revolutionary Guards.
The state television on Sunday announced a 40-day mourning period and seven public holidays following the killing of the country’s 86-year-old supreme leader, who had been in power since 1989.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards, meanwhile, vowed to punish the "murderers" of Khamenei.
Israel targets Iranian facilities in ‘heart of Tehran’
The Israeli military said on Sunday that it had begun striking targets deep inside Tehran, a day after a joint US-Israeli attack killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
"The IDF is striking targets that belong to the Iranian terror regime in the heart of Tehran," the military said.
"Over the past day, the Israeli Air Force conducted large-scale strikes in order to establish aerial superiority and to pave the path to Tehran."
Israeli strikes reported near the Iranian Red Crescent building and hospitals in Tehran, Red Crescent says. Explosions also heard near Iran’s state broadcasting complex, Iranian media reports.
Avenging Khamenei’s killing is 'legitimate duty' Iran’s Pezeshkian
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday that avenging the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes was a right and obligation of the country.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime," said Pezeshkian in a statement carried by state TV.
Iran security chief Larijani says US, Israel will see stronger retaliation
Tehran's security chief Ali Larijani vowed on Sunday to hit the US and Israel with a force never seen before following their strikes on Iran which killed the country's supreme leader.
"YESTERDAY IRAN FIRED MISSILES AT THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL, AND THEY DID HURT. TODAY WE WILL HIT THEM WITH A FORCE THAT THEY HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE," said Larijani in a post on X.
Explosions heard in east of Saudi capital Riyadh: report
Residents in Riyadh heard loud explosions in the east of the Saudi capital on Sunday, as Iran presses on with a second day of retaliatory strikes across the Gulf.
Residents in eastern Riyadh told AFP they heard several loud bangs and saw smoke rising, with correspondents also hearing the explosions.
Oman port and oil hit attacked as Iran targets Gulf region
Four crew members were injured in an attack on a Palau-flagged oil tanker off the coast of Oman, the country’s Maritime Security Center reported on Sunday.
The SKYLIGHT tanker was targeted about five nautical miles north of Khasab Port in the Musandam Governorate, the centre said.
“All 20 crew members, including 15 Indians and five Iranians, were safely evacuated,” the statement added.
The injured were transferred for medical treatment, though the centre did not provide details on who carried out the attack.

UN nuclear agency to hold extraordinary meeting on Iran
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will hold an extraordinary meeting on Monday, following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, partly targeting Tehran’s atomic programme.
The Vienna-based agency said Russia, a key ally of Tehran, requested the meeting.
Iran had also made the same request in a letter to IAEA chief Rafael Grossi after the strikes, which led to the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
The IAEA said the special session of its 35-member Board of Governors will address the US and Israeli strikes on Iran, ahead of a previously scheduled meeting, as the agency stresses the “utmost urgency” of verifying all nuclear material in the country.
Thousands protest in India-administered Kashmir after Khamenei’s killing
Thousands of Muslims joined street demonstrations in Indian-administered Kashmir to protest against the killing of Khamenei after strikes by the United States and Israel.
Protesters holding red, black, and yellow flags converged on the main square in the heart of Srinagar, the main city of Indian Kashmir.
Many of them chanted anti-Israel and anti-US slogans during the emotionally charged but largely peaceful gathering.

US base in Erbil witnesses smoke and chaos following aerial attack
Smoke was seen rising from a US military base in Erbil, Iraq, following a series of explosions, local sources reported.
The blasts, which shook the surrounding area, may have resulted from a direct aerial attack on military facilities.
