TikTok has deleted more than 1.5 million videos posted by Ugandans over what the social media network terms "platform violation".
According to The East African newspaper, the videos were removed from the platform between April and June, 2025, with TikTok stating that they contained hate speech, misinformation, and obscenity.
Following the recent crackdown, Uganda was ranked 29th in the world among nations with the highest number of videos removed from TikTok during the three-month period.
Uganda's 1.5 million video removals significantly exceed the 592,000 TikTok posts deleted from users' accounts in the neighbouring Kenya, which has one of the most active TikTok users globally.
Thousands affected
South Africa registered at least 420,000 video removals, while more than 310,000 videos were taken down in Nigeria.
Globally, TikTok deleted 189 million videos for violation of its community guidelines between April and June.
TikTok is Uganda's second most-used social media network, behind instant messaging service, WhatsApp.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) states that the East African nation has 8.8 million active TikTok users, accounting for approximately 17% of the country's population.
According to TikTok, the crackdown on Ugandan users' videos extended to the accounts that displayed alcohol, drugs, and firearms, as well as body exposure.
Ugandans' TikTok use has occasionally made news headlines following the arrests of several people in separate incidents, in which they were accused of using the platform to insult President Yoweri Museveni and his family.
One of the convicts, Edward Awebwa, was sentenced to six years in prison in July 2024, while another, Emmanuel Nabugodi, was imprisoned for 32 months in November that year for using TikTok to insult the first family.
