Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced that he will task Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot with forming the next government.
Eisenkot has been invited to receive the mandate at a ceremony at the president’s residence on Sunday at 15:00 GMT, according to a report by Israeli media.
Once he receives the mandate, Eisenkot will have 28 days to form a government. Herzog can grant an extension of up to 14 days under Israel’s Basic Law.
Israel's president chose Gadi Eisenkot, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's strongest rival, to try to form a new government, Israeli media reported, following a deadlocked election that left neither man with a clear path to power.
The Arab bloc, angered by the policies of Netanyahu and his far-right allies, nominated Eisenkot during marathon talks with President Isaac Herzog.
