Ghana is mourning the death of one of its most beloved gospel icons, Maame Tiwaa, whose voice and artistry helped shape the country’s modern gospel sound.

The renowned vocalist, born Mary Tiwaa, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the age of 62.

For more than three decades, Maame Tiwaa stood as one of the radiant pillars of Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo, a group whose music transcended generations.

Her voice, described by fans as powerful, became the soul of many of Asomafo’s timeless hits. Songs such as “Wo Haw Ne Sen”, “Awurade Ka Me Ho”, “Yen Fa Oye Nkoaa”, and “Mensuro” echoed through churches, homes, and radio stations across the nation, offering comfort and spiritual upliftment to millions.

Earlier this year, she delivered one of her most memorable performances during the 2025 Ghana Music Awards.
