Drone strikes targeted a power station and other sites in the city of Managil in Sudan’s central Gezira state on Wednesday, knocking the station out of service and cutting electricity to the city.
Local sources told Anadolu that the drones targeted the main power station east of Managil, a fuel tanker inside an oil depot east of the station, and a gas station.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or details on the extent of the damage.
The strikes came amid a series of drone attacks for the third consecutive day targeting cities under the control of the Sudanese army where no direct fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is taking place.
RSF accused of drone attack
The attacks targeted cities in Khartoum and Gezira states in central Sudan, Sennar in the southeast, and Gedaref in the east.
On Tuesday, Sudan’s Ministry of Energy and Oil announced power outages across large parts of several states, including Khartoum and River Nile.
The ministry attributed the outages to a power station being put out of service following a drone attack, which it accused the paramilitary RSF of carrying out.
On Monday, Sudan Electricity Company said the RSF had targeted five electricity transformer stations with drones in Sennar state in the southeast, Gedaref state in the east, and Gezira state in central Sudan.
UN expresses concern
Meanwhile, the UN expressed concern on Tuesday over continued drone attacks in Sudan and the damage they were causing to critical civilian infrastructure, following strikes on power stations.
Since April 2023, Sudan’s army and the RSF have been engaged in a conflict stemming from disagreements over the integration of the paramilitary group into the military.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced nearly 13 million others, and worsened famine and the humanitarian crisis across the country, according to UN and international estimates.
