Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Mwigulu Nchemba as the new prime minister, the parliament's speaker said on Thursday.

Nchemba previously served as the Minister of Finance and Planning. He also served as Minister of Home Affairs from 2016 to 2018.

Before joining elective Tanzanian politics, Dr. Nchemba worked as an economist at the Bank of Tanzania. Later, President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

He obtained a Master of Economics degree at Dar es Salaam University and later earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the same institution.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in on November 3, 2025, for a second term in office following her landslide election victory, in a tightly controlled ceremony held amid protests, political tension, and a nationwide internet blackout.
