Di council tok say dem base dis announcement on di fact say dem no see di Shawwal 1447AH new moon on Wednesday, wey be di 29th day of Ramadan.
For Islam, di end of Ramadan and di beginning of Shawwal dey depend on if dem see di crescent moon or not, wey be practice wey come from di teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Di Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, wey di Sultan of Sokoto dey lead, dey coordinate moon sighting efforts across Nigeria through network of committees, so dat dem go get unified announcement for Muslims for di country.
According to di statement, "No report was received from various Moon Sighting Committees across the country confirming the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1447AH on Wednesday, March 18, which corresponded with the 29th day of Ramadan."
"Therefore, Thursday, 19th March 2026, be di 30th day of di month of Ramadan 1447AH," di statement add.
"Di Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of di Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, accept di report and accordingly declare Friday, 20th March 2026, as di first day of Shawwal 1447AH (Day of Eid-el-Fitr)," di statement still tok.
