Today, di members of House of Representatives for Nigeria go vote on state police mata.

Dis one na big step for di fight against insecurity for di National Assembly. Di bill wey talk about state police go get second reading for Senate as well.

Na Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, talk yesterday say dem go present one change to Section 214 of di Constitution, and House members go vote on am. Kalu na di main person wey bring di bill, and e also be di Chairman of House Committee on Constitution Review.

All House members wey dey do oversight work, dem don order dem to come back to Abuja for today’s meeting.

One source for Senate last night talk say di bill, togeda with oda proposed constitutional change bills, don already pass first reading and dem go do second reading today.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, talk on Monday say dem go pass di state police bill dis week because di matter of insecurity for Nigeria need urgent answer.

As di current Constitution be, policing dey for Exclusive Legislative List, wey mean say na only federal government get power to do am. Di change wey dem want make na to move policing go Concurrent Legislative List, wey go allow states to form and run their own police.

Apart from Kalu, oda people wey support di bill include House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, Fatima Talba, Blessing Onuh, Tolani Shagaya and 10 oda lawmakers.

According to di draft of di change, di bill go add new definitions for Section 318 of di Constitution, wey go give legal backing to both state police and community policing.

Under di proposal, state police mean say “na security agency wey go operate inside one state to maintain law and order for inside dat state jurisdiction.”

Di bill also define community policing as “one kind policing wey security people go work hand-in-hand with residents, community groups and local people to stop crime, keep public safe and solve security problems through joining hands, finding solutions, building trust and regular talks with di community.”

Clause 2 of di proposed change want to change Section 214 of 1999 Constitution by replacing am wit new provision wey go establish:

“(a) Federal Police wey dem go call Nigeria Police; and
“(b) State Police for each state of di Federation.”

Di change still talk say di Nigeria Police, State Police or Community Police wey dem establish under dis section go dey organized and run according to how National Assembly go write am for law.

Di proposed change also talk say members of Nigeria Police go get powers and do duties wey law allow dem to do.

If di bill pass for both House of Representatives and Senate, dem go send am to di 36 state Houses of Assembly make dem ratify am.

Before any constitutional change go reach President Bola Ahmed Tinubu make e sign am, at least two-thirds of di state legislatures must first approve am.
