Nigerian Government say dem dey develop policy for small hydro projects wey go turn di 21 idle dams wey dem discover along Sokoto-Badagry Road into business wey go make money.
Di Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, talk dis one for Abuja on Wednesday for di launch of Renewable Energy Asset Management Company.
Tegbe say di discovery of di dams during di road construction wey dey go on make people ask why dem abandon such big infrastructure for many years.
“And again, for di middle of di Sokoto-Badagry Road construction, dem find 21 dams. How we go get 21 dams wey just dey idle?” e ask.
While e dey explain di government plan for di facilities, di minister say President Bola Tinubu don give am order to make sure dem put di dams to use.
“Na why for power sector, we dey also come up with policy for small hydro projects. So dat di 21 dams wey dem discover along Sokoto-Badagry Expressway go turn into business wey go make money,” e talk.
Tegbe say di plan be part of Federal Government bigger effort to make sure public assets dey useful and make sure di infrastructure wey dey already dey put to good use.
Tegbe say di government dey look at areas where power assets don get stuck or idle and plan to connect dem to places wey need di light.
“We dey look at assets for some corridors wey get stuck power and idle power, and we want to send dem to di corridors wey need am – for Lagos, for Kano, and for Borno areas,” e talk.
Di minister say di government still dey work on grid stabilisation, as dem don identify three major energy zones and corridors wey include di Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.
“We don identify three major energy zones and corridors: di Lagos axis, Epe, wey dey reach di main Lagos go Sagamu axis; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano; and den Enugu–Port Harcourt,” Tegbe talk.
E say dem dey do technical audits to check di condition of infrastructure along di corridors and guide dem on wetin to replace wey don spoil.
“We dey do technical audits now to know di infrastructure wey dey there. How many of our insulators don break? How many of our conductor relays dey fall? How many of our towers don fall? And for next few weeks, once we finish, we go start to replace some of di equipment and infrastructure wey don dey there for 42 years,” e talk.
Tegbe note say di government no go sell dia assets but dem go try to put dem to good use and use dem to attract money.
