Istanbul University hosts discussion on Türkiye–Somalia relations
Scholars and diplomats discussed ties between the two countries across historical, diplomatic, military and socioeconomic dimensions.
Scholars and diplomats met at Istanbul University’s African Studies Application and Research Center (AUAM) on Wednesday to take part in discussions on the trajectory of relations between Türkiye and Somalia.
The discussions held under the title “Türkiye–Somalia Relations from Past to Present” focused on ties between the two countries across historical, diplomatic, military and socioeconomic dimensions.
The diverse group of specialists were joined by Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Bülent Zülfika in exploring the evolving nature of the Türkiye–Somalia partnership, especially on security cooperation, diplomatic engagement, and humanitarian outreach.
Contributions from Dr. Gökhan Kavak, Prof. Dr. Cihat Yaycı, M. Hassan Abdirashid, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kavas, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın Özkan offered a multidimensional perspective on the topics.
Integrated and strategic framework
Discussions emphasised that relations between the two countries have moved beyond conventional bilateral engagement toward a more integrated and strategic framework.
Türkiye’s role in supporting Somalia’s security sector—especially through training initiatives and institutional collaboration—was highlighted as a key pillar in strengthening state capacity.
Participants also underscored Türkiye’s sustained diplomatic engagement in Mogadishu, which has enabled close cooperation with Somali authorities in areas such as governance, development coordination, and institutional strengthening.
This consistent presence reflects a long-term and structured approach to partnership.
Education and human capital development were also identified as central components of this relationship.
Academic opportunities
Programs implemented by the Türkiye Maarif Foundation, along with academic opportunities in Türkiye, are contributing to the formation of a skilled Somali workforce with international exposure.
The discussion further noted expanding economic cooperation, including forthcoming offshore energy initiatives, alongside improved connectivity through direct air links between Mogadishu and Istanbul, which continue to facilitate trade, mobility, and humanitarian access.
Türkiye’s diplomatic role at the regional level was also addressed, particularly its efforts to promote dialogue and stability.
In this regard, the 2024 “Ankara Process” - Türkiye's diplomatic initiative to strengthen relations between Somalia and Ethiopia - was cited as an example of constructive engagement aimed at easing tensions and encouraging negotiation.
Sudan crisis
In addition, the program incorporated a dedicated academic discussion on the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
The session examined the historical and political background of the conflict, its humanitarian consequences, and possible pathways toward peace from an analytical perspective.
The program concluded with a closing address by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kavas, Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at Istanbul Commerce University and a retired ambassador, who reflected on Türkiye’s role in international mediation and the prospects for regional peace mechanisms.
Overall, the panel highlighted a steadily deepening partnership shaped by mutual priorities, practical cooperation, and a shared interest in long-term stability and institutional development.
