Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in for a second term after being reappointed by parliament. This follows his party's emphatic victory in the June elections.
"Abiy Ahmed is hereby appointed as the prime minister of Ethiopia," the newly elected Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Shide, announced in a televised session on Monday.
The Prosperity Party secured a large majority in parliament, winning 438 seats out of those announced.
The new parliamentary term officially opened on October 5, 2026, paving the way for the formation of Abiy's new government.
Abiy Ahmed, who first came to power in 2018, begins the new five-year term as Ethiopia faces major challenges, including renewed fighting in Tigray and tensions with some neighbouring countries.
His government says its priorities include economic development, national dialogue, as well as peace and stability.
