Ghana's foreign minister said Friday that 55 Ghanaians had been killed while fighting in Ukraine.
"We were informed that 272 Ghanaians are believed to have been lured into battle since 2022 for which an estimated 55 have been killed and 2 captured as prisoners of war," minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said on X after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart in Kiev.
The Russia-Ukraine war started in 2022 and has drawn in mercenaries and foreign fighters on both sides of the conflict, including from several African countries.
Ukraine said on Wednesday that more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries — including Ghana — had been identified among Russia's ranks, and that some of them had been captured.
Governments across Africa have previously cautioned their citizens against joining the conflict. Others like Kenya and South Africa have asked Russia to allow the repatriation of the bodies of their nationals killed and those captured as prisoners of war.
